Upper Secondary School
THE PERFECT PREPARATION for THE ABITUR
In the Upper Secondary School at GISAD, we optimally prepare your children for the Abitur and subsequent university studies. After successfully completing Lower Secondary School, students enter the qualification phase of the Upper Secondary School. Here, they benefit from a wide range of subjects and rigorous instruction that promotes both academic and personal development.
Our goal is to provide students with a comprehensive and solid education that prepares them well for future challenges. The curriculum is practice-oriented and designed to enhance students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through innovative teaching methods and modern technologies, we foster an interactive and engaging learning environment.
We place special emphasis on promoting independence and self-responsibility. Our students learn to work independently and take responsibility for their learning process, which benefits them not only in school but also in their future professional lives.
Additionally, we support students with individual counseling and guidance in their study and career choices, easing their transition to the next phase of life. With a combination of academic excellence, personal support, and an inspiring learning environment, we create the best conditions for the success of our students in the Upper Secondary School and beyond.
THE GERMAN INTERNATIONAL ABITUR (DIA) AT GISAD
Since the 2018/19 school year, GISAD has offered the German International Abitur (DIA), which is recognized worldwide. The DIA places a particular emphasis on the English language: for example, Geography is taught in English, and Biology is taught bilingually. The proportion of foreign language instruction can be up to 50%, ensuring a high level of proficiency in both German and English.
At the end of Upper Secondary School, students take exams in three written and two oral subjects. For the fifth examination subject, there are three oral examination formats to choose from:
- Presentation Examination
- Debate
- Special Achievement
The standardized examination requirements of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) apply to all German international schools, and a KMK representative oversees the proper conduct of the examinations.
Detailed information and regulations on the DIA can be found in the examination regulations and guidelines on the KMK website or in the downloads section. At the beginning of Upper Secondary School, students receive a guide that summarizes the most important regulations and serves as a reference.
Our Upper Secondary School concept at GISAD is based on a carefully structured timetable and a diverse range of subjects that meet the requirements of a modern high school. In addition to compulsory core subjects, students have the opportunity to choose elective courses that align with their interests and strengths. We follow the Thuringian curricula and the standardized examination requirements for the Abitur to ensure a solid and high-quality education. The targeted promotion of independence and self-responsibility prepares students for the high academic demands of the Abitur and subsequent university studies.
